Entry from: Hong Kong, China Entry Title: "Lantau Island - escape from city scapes" Entry: "Most likely, when thinking of Hong Kong, you do not think a sleepy little village, with a little square, some bicycles propped up against a tree here and there, old women carrying shopping bags, old men drinking beer in the middle of the day, dogs lazily sleeping the afternoon away in the sun, or kids throwing pebbles into a nearby creek. And yet... There are many outlaying islands you can take a ferry to from Hong Kong main ferry terminal, but we only had a chance to visit one. We went to Lantau. It's only about 30 minutes by ferry, but once you get there, you may feel like Alice slipping through the looking glass. The ferry took us to Mui Wo, a deserted, sleepy little town, resembling more a Greek island village off-season than something just half an hour away from one of the world's largest cities (7 mil inhabitants). Neither one of us could figure out what was going on. Why don't people choose to live on Lantau and commute to Hong Kong? With beautiful clean beaches, soft sands and lovely vistas, why isn't this place full of resorts? Dave's theory was that they tried and failed (his only clue: a hotel under renovation and a few maybe 7 or 8 story apartment buildings), but I saw it as a protected paradise, a ...
